A Chinese social-media leaker says Apple is testing a new camera feature for the iPhone 18 Pro that could extend optical zoom beyond what current models offer. The rumor remains unconfirmed but has already gained traction among Apple-focused sites.
At the heart of it lies a “teleconverter,” an optical magnifier common in traditional cameras that extends a lens’s effective focal length—offering greater reach but usually at the cost of reduced light. Rumors also point to a “variable aperture,” a lens opening that changes size to manage light intake and occasionally depth of field.
This matters because the premium smartphone arena is now all about camera prowess, and zoom improvements are the simplest to highlight during in-store demos. Plus, it comes at a tough stage in the cycle, where big hardware shifts start running up against the realities of mass production.
MacRumors reported that the Weibo account “Smart Pikachu” says a variable-aperture camera system has hit late-stage engineering samples. Teleconverters are also “under evaluation” for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The site noted Apple could still scrap these features during testing and flagged the leaker’s stronger track record with Android devices than with Apple. 1
Supply-chain insider Ming-Chi Kuo disclosed in 2024 that Apple will add a variable aperture to the Pro models: “The iPhone 18 Pro’s wide camera will upgrade to variable aperture in 2026,” he said. 2

Teleconverters are also under evaluation.” The outlet flagged the teleconverter mention as “unlikely,” suggesting it could be a mistranslation or just shorthand for another zoom-related adjustment. 3
AppleInsider highlighted that teleconverters boost zoom but reduce the amount of light hitting the sensor, which usually results in diminished sharpness and contrast—problems that stand out in low-light settings. The site added that since Apple is reportedly still mulling over the feature, it might not appear in the final model. 4
Smartphones face hurdles with longer zoom lenses due to size and durability issues. Samsung Electronics and Google addressed this by pairing multiple cameras with heavy image processing, pushing magnification higher without adding bulk to the devices.
Forbes reports that the iPhone 18 Pro’s display could see its biggest redesign in years. Leaks indicate the “Dynamic Island” cutout will shrink around 35%, dropping from about 20.76 mm to 13.49 mm. 5

And just because Apple experiments with a feature internally doesn’t guarantee it will appear in the final product.
