Garmin Connect iOS bug fix rolls out after watches stop syncing — but not everyone is back online

Garmin is rolling out an updated Garmin Connect iOS app to tackle watch-to-phone syncing issues users faced after recent updates. Version 5.21.1 includes the fix, though some might need to re-pair their devices to restore full functionality.

This disruption hits hard because Garmin Connect is the crucial link for moving workouts, health stats, and settings from the watch to the phone. When Bluetooth pairing between the devices fails, data transfer stops cold, and the watch quickly loses the essential features users depend on.

Users say the problem is only hitting iOS devices; Android watches seem fine. Reports came from owners of the Fenix 8, Venu 4, and Forerunner 970 models. Once the connection drops, watches stop sending phone notifications and lose access to Garmin Pay, the company’s contactless payment system, along with some navigation features.

Garmin confirmed a glitch that causes some devices to disconnect following the iOS 5.21 update, according to a report from Gadgets & Wearables. Users still facing problems after updating to 5.21.1 should unpair and then re-pair their devices. Garmin cautions that this reset will delete any Garmin Pay wallet data, meaning users will need to set it up anew.

TechRadar reported that a few users got around the problem by removing the device from Garmin’s web portal, then forgetting it in the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings before adding it back through the app. Some others had luck starting the pairing process straight from the watch’s connectivity menu, but results varied.

Garmin Connect’s newest update on the Apple App Store is version 5.21.1, described simply as including bug fixes and performance improvements.

The patch isn’t hitting the mark for everyone. Over the past two days, users on Garmin Forums have flagged that the latest 5.21.1.1 update still fails to recognize some devices. Others noted their watches disappeared from the app, even though Wi‑Fi syncing kept working.

Garmin faces stiff competition in the crowded premium fitness and outdoor watch market, where glitches like this can rapidly eat up support time and spark returns. Connectivity issues with phones could drive customers to rivals such as Apple and Samsung, who have a reputation for more dependable connections.

Garmin’s current recommendation is simple: update to version 5.21.1. If the watch remains “missing,” try deleting the connection and pairing it again from the beginning.
