OnePlus looks to be eyeing a new category outside smartphones, if fresh leak photos and subsequent reports are any indication. What’s surfaced appears to be an Android-powered handheld gaming device, sporting shoulder triggers, cameras on the back, and a SIM slot. Details from a separate Weibo leak mention an 8-inch screen and MediaTek’s top-tier Dimensity chip. Officially, though, OnePlus hasn’t confirmed any such hardware. 2
The timing of the leak is significant: Shenzhen-based OnePlus has been ramping up its gaming push across its phones, just as IDC flagged in February that the wider smartphone market is barreling toward its sharpest annual shipment slump ever in 2026. IDC’s Francisco Jeronimo described the memory shortage squeezing handsets as “not a temporary squeeze.” That pressure could force smaller Android players to chase fresh demand, searching for any edge. 1
The move lands as the gaming hardware business remains unsettled. According to Newzoo, consoles are set to lead videogame industry growth up to 2027, buoyed by Nintendo’s current hardware cycle and headline releases. The Xbox Ally handheld, a collaboration between Microsoft and Asus, underlines that larger brands continue to pour money into portable gaming. 3

Just a day before, Bald Panda tipped on Weibo that “OnePlus is going to make an 8-inch handheld” powered by a flagship Dimensity chip. HotHardware, referencing another post by Digital Chat Station, pointed out the initial leak described an Android handheld focused on first-person shooters—think more multi-finger touch and fast response, not packed with the standard buttons and joysticks. 4
That suggests OnePlus is headed for a phone-console crossover rather than just a handheld gaming device. According to Android Authority, the leaked render features a SIM tray, and Ice Universe claims users could make calls and use it as a regular Android phone, in addition to the gaming controls. 2
This isn’t exactly a big departure from OnePlus’s current messaging. The company’s website touts “always-on 120 FPS” gaming and a 165Hz display for the OnePlus 15. Over on the homepage, the Nord 6 is pitched with the slogan “Strikes Fast. Stays Cool.” and also features a 165Hz panel. 5
If OnePlus moves ahead, it’ll be entering a landscape now defined by Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 and Microsoft’s Xbox Ally, made by Asus. But there’s a catch: pricier memory chips are already pressuring hardware margins. In December, NYU Stern’s Joost van Dreunen flagged that console prices could climb 10% to 15% over the next year or two.
