Indane, HP Gas, Bharat Gas Alert: LPG Subsidy Could Stop In 7 Days After Tax Check

New Delhi, May 12, 2026, 13:50 (IST)

Some state-run oil marketing firms are now sending out alerts to certain LPG customers, warning that their cooking-gas subsidy may be cut off if income-tax records show they earned more than Rs 10 lakh and don’t reply within a week. The move signals a stepped-up effort to verify and potentially remove subsidy access for domestic cylinder users.

Why now? After years of relying on self-reported income caps, the checks are shifting toward actual data matching. According to Oil Ministry officials quoted by Business Today, Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum have started cross-checking LPG subscriber lists with Income Tax Department records. Consumers flagged in this process are receiving official SMS notifications.

The subsidy review drops at a time when fuel markets are already tight. Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday insisted there’s “no LPG supply issue,” noting that output was bumped up to 54,000 tonnes per day, compared to the earlier 35,000-36,000 tonnes, as the conflict in West Asia drags on. Puri also put India’s LPG reserves at 45 days. ThePrint

Consumers are getting SMS alerts saying their income, based on tax data, is over the set threshold. The message gives them a choice: dispute the findings via the national helpline, 1800-2333-555, or go directly to their oil marketing company’s portal. Taxscan warned that ignoring the notice could result in losing the subsidy if there’s no response within the specified timeframe.

The rule itself isn’t fresh. Back in December 2015, the petroleum ministry announced that anyone—consumer or spouse—earning over Rs 10 lakh in taxable income during the prior financial year, as defined by the Income Tax Act, 1961, would lose access to the LPG subsidy. Starting January 2016, the rule rolled out on a self-declaration basis for booking cylinders.

The immediate spark is minor but packs a punch. According to Deccan Herald, consumers not paying income tax, who have Aadhaar-linked bank accounts, are credited Rs 24.5 for each cylinder booked. Bengaluru residents quoted in the story didn’t hide their doubts: one described the amount as “measly,” another worried about “a scam” or even a “data privacy breach.” Deccan Herald

Under the Direct Benefit Transfer for LPG, or PAHAL, domestic cylinders are sold at market price while the subsidy lands straight in the customer’s bank account. Back in December, officials pointed to Aadhaar verification, biometric checks, and culling duplicate or inactive connections as moves that tightened up these targeted transfers.

Add to that another wrinkle: the delivery code. Indane, HP Gas, and Bharat Gas have each issued warnings about scams exploiting the Delivery Authentication Code—a one-time password meant to verify LPG cylinder drop-off. HPCL reminded customers its staff won’t request OTPs over the phone, on WhatsApp, or through any odd links.

Still, the subsidy sweep isn’t straightforward. The SMS message now talks about a “linked family member,” but back in 2015, the rule named the consumer or spouse specifically. That difference opens the door to fights about mismatched data, outdated household connections, or records that get misread. There’s also the chance of privacy gripes or scam worries derailing the whole thing.

For customers, this boils down to a specific issue: the alert concerns the subsidy credit itself, not access to buying a cylinder. Business Today pointed out that those no longer eligible can still purchase cylinders at market rates, though they won’t get the subsidy deposited afterward.

For oil majors, getting the message across is only half the battle; making it register is tougher. Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum now face the tricky job of weeding out ineligible subsidy accounts—without triggering suspicions that their official notices are just more phishing. That’s where the backlash is expected to hit next.
