  • Kepler to launch first optical-relay LEO satellite network on SpaceX rocket
January 10, 2026, 1:18 AM EST. Toronto-based Kepler Communications is set to launch ten 300-kilogram satellites from SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. If successful on Sunday, Jan. 11, it would mark the first low-Earth-orbit system built around an optical relay network, using laser links to move data directly in space rather than a downlink to Earth. Each satellite carries at least four optical terminals, enabling space-air-ground data flows and reducing latency. A live webcast of the Twilight Mission will begin about 15 minutes before liftoff on SpaceX's site and X account; a backup window is planned for Jan. 12. If achieved, Kepler would outpace rivals like Amazon and Starlink and push expansion of its on-orbit computing and cloud services with clients such as Axiom Space.
