  • US extends Tesla self-driving probe by five weeks
January 19, 2026, 2:24 AM EST. U.S. regulators granted Tesla a five-week extension to respond to allegations that its cars violated traffic laws while using Full Self-Driving (FSD). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened the investigation in October after receiving dozens of reports of red lights and wrong-way driving, covering about 2.9 million vehicles equipped with FSD. The agency says 62 complaints have now been identified, up from 58 in October. Tesla has argued it repeatedly warns drivers to stay ready to intervene; regulators say many drivers reported no warning before erratic behavior. The company's FSD remains Level 2, requiring driver attention, while a more capable version is in testing. Tesla stock traded around $439 midday.
