Apple and Google began rolling out major changes in Japan after the country’s Mobile Software Competition Act took full effect on Dec. 18. Apple now allows alternative app marketplaces and expanded payment options in iOS 26.2, while Google is adding search and browser choice screens and new billing options. Apple set external payment fees up to 15%, Google up to 20%, down from previous rates as high as 30%.

Google has enabled native call recording for Pixel 6 and newer phones with the November 2025 Pixel Feature Drop and an updated Google Phone app. The feature appears in Call Assist and may not be available in all regions due to local laws. Users are notified that recording rules must be followed. Some non-Pixel Android phones may also access call recording, depending on region.
