  • Google adds Gemini AI to Gmail by default, with an option to disable
January 9, 2026, 2:04 AM EST. Google is integrating Gemini AI into Gmail, with AI Overviews, Help Me Write and new Suggested Replies enabled by default for all users, including free accounts. The company says the features summarize long threads and tailor responses, echoing 'search' style AI benefits. A natural-language inbox search and AI proofreading stay behind paywalls for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Help Me Write remains available to everyone; Smart Replies evolve into Suggested Replies that reflect a user's writing style. An 'AI Inbox' view is in testing and could arrive widely later this year, organizing messages as daily tasks based on contact patterns. Rollout begins for US English users, with broader access in coming days. Google says it does not train on personal message text and runs AI in isolated environments.
