  • Tesla brings 4680 battery cells back to Model Y to hedge tariffs
January 28, 2026, 9:04 PM EST. Tesla said in its Q4 2025 shareholder update that it has begun producing Model Y packs with its 4680 cells, aiming to diversify supply amid tariff risks and lingering trade barriers. The company frames the move as a supply-chain hedge, not a reboot of the original 4680 rollout. Tesla also said it is advancing domestic battery work, with dry-electrode 4680 cells using Texas anode and cathode production; it expects domestic cathode material in Texas and LFP lines in Nevada to start in 2026. The company notes the disclosed figures reflect installed capacity-capacity, not actual output. The 4680 program has a turbulent history, from initial promises of cheaper batteries to a parked project as the Cybertruck consumed most of the cells, then a late-stage revival.
