  • Tesla to invest $2 billion in Elon Musk's xAI, deepening AI ties
January 29, 2026, 8:08 PM EST. Tesla disclosed in a shareholder letter on Wednesday that it has invested $2 billion in Elon Musk's AI startup xAI, the company behind the Grok chatbot and owner of X. The investment follows xAI's $20 billion Series E funding announced three weeks earlier. Other disclosed investors include Valor Equity Partners, Fidelity, Qatar Investment Authority, as well as strategic backers Nvidia and Cisco. Tesla's move drew scrutiny because a 2023 shareholder vote on approving an investment in xAI was effectively rejected due to abstentions. Tesla argues the deal aligns with its Master Plan Part IV to blend AI with the physical world, noting a framework agreement to evaluate collaborations and existing ties such as Megapack power for xAI data centers and Grok's integration in some vehicles. Musk said collaborations could accelerate progress.
