  • Apple Home update deadline nears as HomeKit moves to Matter and Thread
February 4, 2026, 8:46 AM EST. More than three years after Apple unveiled a new Apple Home architecture to improve reliability and support for Matter, the company says owners must update soon. Some users still run the old HomeKit setup, but that version will be retired, and devices may stop working after the deadline. The update arrived with iOS 16.2 and was reintroduced in iOS 16.4, shifting more tasks to the HomeKit hub (HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV) to boost stability. Thread-enabled Matter accessories require a Thread-capable hub or a third-party border router. The deadline is February 10, 2026. To check, open the Home app, go to More > Home Settings > Software Update, and tap Update Now. If up to date, you'll see This home and all accessories are up to date.
