Google Pixel Battery Drain Bug Hits Phones After April Update as Fix Remains Unclear

  • Google is looking into reports that Pixel phones have been draining battery faster following the March and April software updates.
  • At issue: idle drain. Users say their phones are burning through battery even when untouched.
  • There’s still no confirmed timeline for a public fix.

Google is looking into complaints about rapid battery drain on Pixel phones, following software updates rolled out in March and April. There’s still no official fix. The company acknowledged the problem on April 14, according to 9to5Google, and has started requesting bug reports from users experiencing the issue.

Timing is key here: the April 2026 Pixel update was planned as a clean-up release. Verizon’s Pixel 10 update page describes the April 7 build as targeting security vulnerabilities, buggy banking and third-party apps, certain gaming issues, plus a home screen quick search bar that had vanished.

This isn’t just a minor annoyance for owners. Pixel users from the 6 up to the 10 are voicing concerns, according to Android Central, about their devices losing charge even when not in use; several report battery life slashed by half or worse, with some still seeing drops even in airplane mode.

An April 13 entry on Google Issue Tracker flags “extreme idle battery drain,” blaming the phone’s CPU for not entering Deep Doze—Android’s deep sleep mode. The issue carries a P1 tag and S1 severity, showing as assigned in the Issue Tracker. Google Issue Tracker

According to a reader poll by Android Authority, 75.9% of thousands of respondents reported their Pixel’s battery drained more quickly following a recent update. Just 15.2% noticed no change in performance. The site pointed out the poll was self-selecting, so it doesn’t reflect the experience of the entire Pixel user base.

It’s not just battery complaints. Aman Kumar at PhoneArena reported his Pixel 10 started lagging after the March Feature Drop—frame drops, keyboard slowdowns, battery drained faster. He noted April’s update brought some relief on performance, but problems still lingered.

Google’s help page notes that a bit of extra battery drain right after a software update isn’t unusual, since the phone is busy downloading and optimizing apps. But if the drain sticks around for more than a few days, Google advises reaching out for support.

Google faces a trust issue when it comes to Pixel updates. Regular monthly patches help sell the Pixel over Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy line, but that same frequency backfires if a maintenance patch suddenly triggers a reliability hiccup for users.

The actual cause remains unconfirmed by Google in any public diagnosis. Deep Doze looks plausible but isn’t conclusive—right now, it’s just a theory, with the most credible figures pulled from user forums and a self-reported poll. There’s no timeline yet for a solution; Google hasn’t committed to a date for a Pixel update, a tweak to Google Play services, or anything on the server side.

For now, users have little recourse beyond the basics: battery checks, app updates, a restart, maybe a bug report if the battery keeps tanking. None of it makes much difference for anyone whose phone can’t make it through the day.
