Microsoft Finally Moves 2TB FAT32 Support Closer to Windows 11 Release as Xbox Mode Expands

Redmond, Washington, April 17, 2026, 11:35 (PDT).

Microsoft on Friday nudged a long-stalled Windows storage tweak closer to prime time, rolling out both a 2TB FAT32 formatting feature and Xbox mode to Windows 11 Release Preview users. The update also throws Xbox mode into a fresh Canary build, stretching the feature across more rungs of Microsoft’s Insider ladder.

Release Preview isn’t just any Insider ring—Microsoft relies on it to give commercial customers and testers a first look at production-ready builds just ahead of rollout. So, seeing these features arrive here signals a step up from the usual early experiments.

Microsoft is rolling out Release Preview builds 26100.8313 and 26200.8313, bringing Xbox mode to laptops, desktops, and tablets. Users on devices with large storage drives will also see faster Settings navigation, plus the FAT32 command-line limit jumps from 32GB to 2TB. The update won’t hit every device or region at once; distribution depends on device and market.

FAT32, a legacy file system for managing data on drives, remains common for boot media and certain aging devices. Back in August 2024, Microsoft rolled out a 2TB command-line formatting option to Canary users; now, with its jump to the Release Preview channel on Friday, the update looks ready to join standard Windows 11 editions.

The increase is there, just not as significant as it appears at first glance. According to Microsoft’s own deployment docs, Windows install drives rely on FAT32—and those drives still can’t hold files over 4GB, so the raised size limit doesn’t actually solve FAT32’s most pressing current issue. For now, Microsoft is only rolling out the higher cap with its command-line format tool.

The storage overhaul is part of a broader push to tidy up. Last month, Windows chief Pavan Davuluri told users to expect “tangible progress” this year, as Microsoft zeroes in on “performance, reliability and well-crafted experiences.” File Explorer and basic responsiveness are front and center in those plans. Microsoft wants gaming on Windows to ditch the desktop vibe when users are after more of a console session. Back in March, Jason Ronald—who heads up next-gen at Xbox—said Xbox mode is set to deliver “a familiar Xbox experience” to Windows but still keep “the flexibility and openness of Windows.” Ian LeGrow, corporate VP for Windows + Devices, has called the new feature “purpose-built for gaming”, targeting those chasing a “console-like feel” from their PC. Canary build 29570.1000, which landed Friday, gives testers the option to start up Xbox mode right from the Xbox app, tweak it in Game Bar settings, or hit Win+F11. On the same day, Microsoft pushed out lighter Dev and Beta builds, which skipped major new features and instead targeted tweaks for File Explorer, Windows Hello, clipboard, and general settings reliability.

Interesting timing here. Valve is pushing SteamOS past just the Steam Deck, opening it up to more third-party handhelds. Over at GDC in March, Microsoft announced Xbox mode for Windows 11 PCs — rollout starting in April, hitting multiple device types in certain markets.

The usual preview warnings still apply to these new builds. Microsoft notes that Release Preview features are rolling out in waves, so timing depends on your device and region. FAT32 now allows up to 2TB, but its old 4GB-per-file limitation hasn’t budged. Microsoft also reminds users that Insider features could be altered or pulled before broader release.
