  • McKinsey chief says AI can't match three human skills
January 8, 2026, 7:06 AM EST. McKinsey's global managing partner Bob Sternfels said AI has limits. In remarks at a conference, he outlined three human skills no model can fully replicate: empathy that shapes client relationships, calibrated judgment under uncertain conditions, and storytelling that converts data into credible strategies. Sternfels warned that AI can crunch data and draft options, but it cannot replace the human touch that guides decisions, ethics, and leadership. He argued firms should pair AI tools with human judgment, using technology to augment rather than replace consultants. The comments come as management consultancies accelerate AI deployments amid demand for faster, data-driven insights.
