  • Quantum computing KPIs could distinguish true breakthroughs from spurious claims
December 12, 2025, 10:38 PM EST. A UK consortium has published a suite of metrics called QCMet to holistically measure quantum computer performance, accompanied by an open-source library. In parallel, IBM and Algorithmiq unveiled the Quantum Advantage Tracker to compare experiments claiming quantum advantage. By highlighting metrics beyond raw qubits counts-such as error rates, connectivity, and run-to-run stability-the effort aims to standardize how results are reported and judged. The QCMet project, led by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), emphasizes that one metric cannot define "better." Critics note that results can vary with hardware, algorithms, and timing, so a data-driven, multi-metric view is essential for separating genuine breakthroughs from hype.
