  • NHTSA opens safety probe into hidden emergency door releases on Tesla Model 3
December 27, 2025, 4:10 AM EST. Federal regulators are evaluating claims that the emergency door release on certain Tesla Model 3 sedans is hidden, unlabeled, and not intuitive to locate during an emergency. The NHTSA is reviewing a petition from Georgia owner Kevin Clouse about a 2023 incident; the probe covers about 179,071 cars from the 2022 model year. NHTSA hasn't decided whether to grant the petition. The move follows a Bloomberg investigation into door-related incidents and fatalities and complements ongoing scrutiny of Model Y doors after power loss. Tesla originally popularized electric door handles that can stop functioning after a crash or power failure. Clouse says he escaped by breaking a rear window when the doors wouldn't open. The agency will determine next steps.
