IBM plans by 2033 to build the world's first large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computers at its Poughkeepsie facility, part of a long-term investment in the Hudson Valley's Quantum Valley. The Starling project, expected by 2029, promises ~20,000× more operations than today's quantum systems, with the successor Blue Jay targeting 1 billion operations by 2033. IBM has tapped a global ecosystem of quantum explorers and users, including Vanguard, HSBC, and E.ON, for its $1 billion quantum services push. The initiative spans from Yorktown Heights to Albany and Rensselaer County, with the world's first quantum data center in Poughkeepsie and a campus installation at RPI. Early applications include drug development, materials discovery, chemistry, and optimization.
