  • How to enable Expanded dark mode on a Google Pixel phone
December 20, 2025, 1:14 AM EST. Google's Pixel updates add an Expanded dark mode option to force a dark theme across apps that don't natively support it, improving accessibility and reducing glare. The feature arrives with the Android QPR2 update for Pixel 6 and newer devices. To use it, check you're on the right build (Settings > About phone > Build number should show BP4A.251205.006 or newer), then go to Settings > Display and touch > Dark theme, and select the Expanded toggle. Note that not all apps will render perfectly, and forcing dark themes can affect user experience in some cases. As a temporary workaround, this is helpful until app developers add native dark mode support.
