- Active PS Plus members can now download Sony’s May PlayStation Plus Essential games.
- EA Sports FC 26, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, and Nine Sols are joining the monthly rotation this time around.
- Sony’s base PS Plus tier just picked up more action and sports titles, a move aimed at grabbing more play hours as console subscription rivals jostle for attention.
The May PlayStation Plus Essential games dropped Tuesday, with EA Sports FC 26 headlining the selection. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers and Nine Sols round out the lineup, German site GamePro reported, noting the titles showed up for subscribers following a midday update.
Timing’s key here. EA Sports FC 26 hits PS Plus just as the European club football season is winding down and right in the middle of EA’s Team of the Season campaign—an Ultimate Team event packed with items celebrating top real-world performances. That live-service angle adds something more than just another monthly download for the sports title.
Sony’s lineup for the month covers several bases: a flagship football title, a PS5-exclusive action RPG, plus a 2D action-platformer. PlayFront called the May bundle “ab sofort”—meaning it’s live now—and noted the mix pairs a major sports license with more challenging picks for dedicated gamers. PlayFront
Adam Michel, director of content acquisition and operations at Sony Interactive Entertainment, revealed in the announcement that all PlayStation Plus members get access to three titles in May’s monthly lineup. He added that subscribers will also be able to grab bonus EA Sports FC 26 content while the game is part of the PS Plus monthly collection.
EA Sports FC 26 is up for grabs on both PS5 and PS4. According to EA, expect more responsive dribbling, improved AI for smarter positioning, quicker player movement, and broad licensing: over 20,000 players, 750+ clubs and national teams, 120 stadiums, and upwards of 35 leagues.
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is up on PS5. It’s a “Soulslike”—that is, expect tough action RPG combat, plenty of retries, boss encounters that don’t forgive mistakes. Nine Sols, on both PS5 and PS4, goes in another direction: hand-drawn 2D action, where success hinges on perfect deflections and timing your blocks and counters, not just rushing the offense.
There are some catches here. Wuchang isn’t included in the PS4 selection, and available games differ depending on the region. On top of that, you’ll need to keep your PS Plus subscription active to access any titles you’ve claimed. Play3 highlighted that April’s Essential picks — Lords of the Fallen, Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, and Sword Art Online: Fractured Daydream — are no longer up for grabs now that the monthly window has closed.
Sony and Microsoft are sticking with subscriptions to hold onto gamers during gaps between blockbuster launches. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass Ultimate bundles in EA Play, so subscribers get access to EA trials, rewards, and a full library of EA games. Sony, for its part, keeps its Essential tier focused on monthly game drops, multiplayer access, and store discounts, but doesn’t offer a huge day-one lineup in that package.
Sony faces a challenge: name recognition alone might not sway all subscribers. EA Sports FC 26 has been around for months, Wuchang is stuck on PS5, and the month’s appeal comes down to whether you’re after a football sim or prefer action-oriented titles. On paper, May stacks up well compared with previous months, but it’s hardly a universal win at home.
