- Sony’s May PlayStation Plus Essential games are now downloadable for active PS Plus members.
- The lineup brings EA Sports FC 26, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers and Nine Sols to the monthly rotation.
- The update gives Sony’s entry PS Plus tier a stronger sports-and-action mix as console subscriptions compete for play time.
Sony’s May PlayStation Plus Essential lineup went live on Tuesday, led by EA Sports FC 26 and joined by Wuchang: Fallen Feathers and Nine Sols, according to German games site GamePro, which reported the titles were available for subscribers after a midday update.
The timing matters. EA Sports FC 26 lands on PS Plus near the close of the European club football season and during EA’s Team of the Season campaign, an Ultimate Team event built around player items tied to standout real-world performances. That gives the sports title a live-service hook beyond a simple monthly download.
It also gives Sony a broad monthly pitch: a mainstream football game, a PS5-only action role-playing game, and a 2D action-platformer. PlayFront described the May drop as available “ab sofort,” or from now, and said the selection combines a large sports licence with tougher games aimed at core players. PlayFront
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Adam Michel, director of content acquisition and operations, wrote when announcing the lineup that May’s monthly games “feature three games available to all PlayStation Plus members.” He also noted that members can claim extra EA Sports FC 26 content during the game’s PS Plus monthly-games residency. EA Sports FC 26 is available through the offer on PS5 and PS4. EA says the game includes more responsive dribbling, smarter AI positioning, sharper player movement and licensing across more than 20,000 players, 750-plus clubs and national teams, more than 120 stadiums and over 35 leagues.
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is listed for PS5. The game is a “Soulslike,” shorthand for an action role-playing game built around demanding combat, repeated attempts and heavy boss fights. Nine Sols, available on PS5 and PS4, is a hand-drawn 2D action game with deflection-based combat, a system built around timing blocks and counters rather than just attacking first.
There are limits. Wuchang is not part of the PS4 offer, regional lineups can vary, and the games remain tied to an active PS Plus subscription once claimed. Play3 also noted that the April Essential titles — Lords of the Fallen, Tomb Raider I-III Remastered and Sword Art Online: Fractured Daydream — have now rotated out of the monthly claim window.
The move comes as Sony and Microsoft keep using subscriptions to lock in players between big releases. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass Ultimate includes EA Play benefits such as trials, rewards and a catalogue of EA titles, while Sony’s Essential tier leans on monthly games, online multiplayer and store discounts rather than a large day-one catalogue at that level.
For Sony, the risk is that a recognizable name may not be enough for every subscriber. EA Sports FC 26 is already several months old, Wuchang is limited to PS5, and the value of the month depends on whether players want a football sim or two combat-heavy games. That makes May a stronger offer on paper than some months, but not a clean win for every household.
