  • Apple eyes under-display infrared tech for high-end iPhone OLEDs, signaling possible Face ID shift
January 19, 2026, 6:20 PM EST. Apple is pursuing under-display infrared technology for future high-end iPhone OLED panels, according to a Korean industry report. The move would place IR sensors beneath the display to support a potential under-screen Face ID, a prerequisite for reducing visible front openings even as Apple weighs product timing. The approach, which would work with an LTPO OLED backplane, aims to avoid notches or large cutouts while preserving sensor performance; however, no shipping product is confirmed. Samsung Display and LG Display are described as the only suppliers able to meet the combined LTPO and UDIR requirements at production scale, with Apple's broader supplier diversification continuing to hedge against single-source risk. Challenges include infrared light behavior under OLED, manufacturing yields, and the possibility of staged implementation rather than a single launch.
