Scientists report the first direct detection of methane in the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, using James Webb and Hubble data from December. The comet’s nucleus measures about 2.6 km wide, larger than expected. 3I/ATLAS is now fading as it exits the inner solar system. Findings are detailed in preprints posted to arXiv.

NASA’s TESS spacecraft captured new images of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS in January as it exits the solar system. Scientists are analyzing changes in the comet’s brightness to study its rotation and activity. TESS observed the comet between January 15 and 22, with data now publicly available. The comet’s apparent magnitude was measured at about 11.5, far dimmer than the naked eye can see.
