In October 2024, Lyten announced plans for the world’s first Li–S battery gigafactory in Nevada, aiming for 10 GWh/year by 2027. In 2023, Phinergy and Indian Oil unveiled India’s first aluminum-air battery vehicle. Laboratory Li–S cells have reached 400–500 Wh/kg.

Sodium-ion batteries offer lower raw material costs and improved safety but have 20–30% less energy density than lithium-ion.
