  • White House defends AI-manipulated image of crying arrested woman, BBC Verify reports
January 23, 2026, 7:40 AM EST. BBC Verify reports that an image of Nekima Levy Armstrong, arrested after a Minnesota protest, was edited with artificial intelligence and circulated by the White House about 30 minutes after an original post by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. In the original Armstrong appears expressionless; the AI version shows her crying. The White House's post on X has drawn millions of views. Hany Farid of UC Berkeley said the White House has shared AI-generated content before. The official, Kaelan Dorr, later said enforcement will continue and memes will persist. Farid called the move troubling, arguing it undermines public trust and makes deceptive content harder to identify.
