February 16, 2026, 12:16 AM EST. A Chinese Academy of Sciences research team field-tested an aluminium-based wide-temperature lithium-ion battery in Heilongjiang. At -25°C, the battery delivered over 92% discharge efficiency in real-world city driving. Officials said it reached about 90% state of charge (SOC) in roughly 20 minutes during low-temperature fast charging. The battery uses an alloy-modified aluminium negative electrode to widen the operating temperature range, with lab data citing stability from -70°C to +80°C. This marks the first installation of this battery type in a production EV model for extreme-cold evaluation, including fast-charge testing. The system relies on a tuned thermal management setup to dissipate heat during subzero charging without extra insulation.
