United’s First UK Boeing 737 MAX Route Gives Glasgow Its New York Link Back

United Airlines has restarted daily nonstop flights between Glasgow and Newark/New York, restoring a direct U.S. link from the Scottish airport for the first time since 2019 and creating what Simple Flying described as United’s first-ever nonstop Boeing 737 MAX route to the UK.

The timing matters for Glasgow. The route gives Scotland’s largest city its only nonstop service by a U.S. airline and puts transatlantic capacity back into the west of Scotland after a long gap that followed United’s exit from Glasgow in October 2019.

The first inbound flight landed at Glasgow Airport on Saturday, May 9. United is flying the route to Newark Liberty International Airport, its main New York-area hub, as a daily seasonal service.

Flight UA231 leaves Glasgow at 14:00 and reaches Newark at 16:35. The return flight, UA230, leaves Newark at 22:15 and arrives in Glasgow at 10:10 the next day. The Glasgow-Newark leg is listed from May 9 to Oct. 24, while Newark-Glasgow runs from May 8 to Oct. 23.

United is using a Boeing 737 MAX 8 with 166 seats: 16 in United Premium Plus, 54 in Economy Plus and 96 in economy. The MAX 8 is a single-aisle jet, a smaller aircraft than the wide-body planes often used on transatlantic routes, which can make thinner city pairs easier to serve.

“We are excited to return to Glasgow,” said Karolien De Hertogh, United’s director of sales for the UK and Ireland. She said passengers in Scotland would be able to connect through United’s U.S. hubs to more than 220 onward destinations across the Americas. Breaking Travel News

Kam Jandu, chief executive of AGS Airports, which owns Glasgow Airport, called the route one of the airport’s “most popular long-haul routes.” He said it had previously carried strong passenger numbers and supported Scottish exports including whisky and seafood. Glasgow Airport

The route also sharpens United’s position in Scotland. The airline already flies from Edinburgh to Newark, Washington D.C. and Chicago, and says it will operate up to four nonstop Scotland-U.S. services a day during summer 2026.

Glasgow Airport is also trying to rebuild a wider U.S. network. The Scottish Sun reported that the airport is targeting possible future routes to Los Angeles and Washington, with talks involving major U.S. carriers including United, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines.

The risk is that the comeback is still seasonal. United has not announced year-round Glasgow-Newark flights, and any further U.S. routes will depend on demand, aircraft availability and route economics. Schedules are also listed as subject to change.

For United, Glasgow is part of a broader summer 2026 transatlantic push from Newark that also includes Split, Bari and Santiago de Compostela. The airline has said it will operate nearly 770 weekly transatlantic round trips in summer 2026.

  • UK Gilt Yields Rise Despite Keir Starmer's Speech Amid Political and Inflation Concerns
May 11, 2026, 11:52 AM EDT. UK government bond yields climbed as Keir Starmer's speech failed to ease investor concerns over political instability and rising inflation. The 10-year gilt yield rose 0.08 percentage points to 5%, with the 30-year yield nearing a 28-year high at 5.67%. Investors worry about Starmer's leadership amid Labour party tensions and escalating energy prices linked to Middle East conflicts. Higher yields increase government borrowing costs, threatening the fiscal headroom Chancellor Rachel Reeves established. Deutsche Bank estimates over half of the £24bn budget buffer may have been lost due to these pressures. Market jitters persist over potential fiscal loosening if Starmer is replaced, undermining the UK's creditworthiness and fiscal stability.
