- Google said some Galaxy device owners are seeing a fault with RCS connections.

Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is dealing with an RCS messaging issue for some Samsung Galaxy users. Google said it’s working with carriers to sort it out, but hasn’t given a timeline for a fix.
The issue is significant after Samsung Electronics (KRX:005930) dropped Samsung Messages in the US in July. Premium Galaxy phones now use Google Messages for RCS. That leaves fewer fallback options for buyers at the high end.
Samsung’s $1,899.99 Galaxy Z Fold8 is showing up in user complaints after its U.S. launch, which started August 7. It’s not clear how many devices are affected or how widespread the problem is. The issue hasn’t been confirmed for every Fold8.
Google said it’s “aware of the issue” and is working with carrier partners to fix it. Some users get error code 3100 when they move data using Smart Switch. Google thinks corrupted cache data could be migrating to the new device.
| Observed situation | What is verified | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| Smart Switch migration | Users report problems after transfers to new Galaxy phones; Google flagged transferred cache data as the likely issue | No numbers on how often this happens |
| Error code 3100 | Some get this code trying to turn on or use RCS | Not every reported case is confirmed |
| Carrier change | Issues come up after changing carriers | Google notes incomplete porting could be its own problem |
| Geographic scope | Problems found on more than one model | No full list of countries or carriers yet |
| Resolution | Google is in talks with carrier partners | No clear timeline or universal fix right now |
This break happens at a rough transition point. Smart Switch handles the local files, Google Messages picks up the number, but then the carrier’s RCS setup has to finish the job. If any part of that chain fails, the end result looks the same for the user.
Google’s main help page says to make sure Messages is set as the default SMS app. The company also suggests checking data access, RCS, updates for the app, and Google Play Services. Any carrier alert in the app should be reported to the carrier.
| Recovery path | Source | Cost or disruption | Confidence today |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start with checking default app, make sure data and RCS are working, see if updates are needed | Google Help | Low | This is standard official advice |
| Try updating Messages, switch off RCS, wipe Carrier Services data, restart device, then turn RCS on again | Google support guidance cited by Android Central | Moderate impact; resets settings and service data | This doesn’t fix it for everyone |
| Use a VPN before you turn RCS back on | User reports | Possible privacy and VPN fees | Only anecdotal reports, not official |
| Do a factory reset | User reports | High disruption; wipes the phone if you don’t have a backup | Still no promise it will work |
First up is the standard checklist from official support. Running a factory reset doesn’t make sense if there’s no backup and you haven’t talked to support. Some users said a VPN workaround helped but this isn’t verified.
| Capability | RCS in Google Messages | SMS/MMS fallback |
|---|---|---|
| Network path | Uses Wi-Fi or mobile data | Goes through carrier SMS/MMS |
| Read receipts | On if enabled by the user | SMS doesn’t support read receipts |
| Typing indicators | On if user turns it on | No typing indicator with SMS |
| Media and groups | Supports bigger media, better group chat | Basic functions only, depends on carrier |
| Failure fallback | Messages may resend if needed | Still works while Samsung switches apps |
RCS supports Wi-Fi messaging, read receipts, and typing status. Google gives users control to resend failed RCS texts. The fallback keeps texts going but some RCS features drop off.
Samsung’s July cutoff puts more pressure on users. Galaxy S26 and later won’t be able to download Samsung Messages anymore. Older Tizen watches will keep simple texting but lose full conversation history.
| Date | Development | Reader impact |
|---|---|---|
| July 2026 | Samsung pulls the plug on Samsung Messages for U.S. users | Google Messages takes over as Galaxy’s RCS option |
| August 7 | Sales of Galaxy Z Fold8 open in some markets | Device upgrades push more users to move data |
| August 19 | More reports come in on RCS, error 3100 gets noticed | No one-size-fits-all solution out |
| August 21 | Google says it’s aware, carriers involved | Issue has been flagged but resolution timing is unclear |
| August 22 | Still no numbers or timeline for resolution | Users try workarounds or shift to SMS/MMS for now |
Risks: Clearing app data wipes local settings. Factory reset deletes anything that isn’t backed up. Unofficial VPN fixes could send your traffic through someone else’s server. Switching RCS on and off a lot might mess up group participation.
The key takeaway is business-focused. Even at $1,900, a phone like this relies on different vendors getting a single registration right. There’s no sweeping Google fix out yet, so migration reliability stays a product issue.
