  • Bloomberg reports that Apple plans to transform Siri into a built-in AI chatbot.
  • Called Campos, the project is set to operate on a top-tier Google Gemini model
  • Apple declined to comment on the report

Apple is gearing up for a significant Siri revamp that will transform the assistant into a built-in AI chatbot across iPhone, iPad, and Mac software later this year, Bloomberg News reported Wednesday. Known internally as Campos, the initiative aims to replace Siri’s existing interface, according to the report.

This shift is significant since chatbots—designed for open-ended conversations—are now the frontline of the AI boom. Apple has come under scrutiny for its speed and ambition, especially as competitors roll out rapid updates in widely used products.

This follows Apple’s initial “Apple Intelligence” launch in 2024, which got a rather tepid response, raising the stakes for the upcoming software update. Simply put, Apple needs Siri to reliably handle tasks beyond just setting timers and browsing the web.

According to Gurman, Apple is set to unveil a chatbot version of Siri at its Worldwide Developers Conference this June, with a launch planned for September. He called it the main highlight of iOS 27, iPadOS, and macOS 27, while other changes will largely concentrate on improving stability.

According to Bloomberg, users would activate the new service just as they do Siri now—either by saying the “Siri” wake word or pressing the side button. Campos’ assistant also supports typing, not just voice commands. Bloomberg

This month, Apple made a deal with Google to integrate Gemini models into Siri, marking a boost for Alphabet as it pushes its AI tech further into smartphones and services. Gemini, Google’s suite of large language models, is trained on massive text datasets to generate responses and handle prompts.

Campos is set to deploy a more advanced iteration of that custom Google model, roughly on par with Gemini 3, Reuters reported. Internally, it will go by “Apple Foundation Models version 11.” The aim is to have this chatbot become the primary interface for Apple’s assistant.

Bloomberg reported that the chatbot is distinct from the Siri personalization features set to arrive in the coming months. Apple appears to be rolling out the upgrade in phases instead of all at once. This staged approach might lower risk but also means each update needs to perform flawlessly to meet expectations.

Apple has yet to respond to requests for comment.

Apple shares climbed roughly 1% in Thursday afternoon trading, with Alphabet shares gaining close to 0.9%.

Major uncertainty remains: Apple hasn’t confirmed any of this, and timelines often slip. Back at WWDC last year, Apple’s software boss Craig Federighi pushed back on the idea of AI as a standalone app, insisting it should be “integrated so it’s there within reach.” That stance seems shakier now if a chatbot-style Siri actually launches as described. Apple is also rumored to be working on new AI hardware. According to The Information, the company is developing an AI-driven wearable pin roughly the size of an AirTag, equipped with cameras and microphones. It could hit the market as soon as 2027.
