- HMD Secure announced that its rugged Terra M handset will hit select European markets starting Feb. 10.
- The company is marketing the device as a managed “mission-critical” solution, combining connectivity, push-to-talk, and fleet management through its partners.
- HMD hasn’t revealed pricing details or clarified which European countries are covered.
On Tuesday, HMD Secure announced that its rugged HMD Terra M handset has launched commercially in select European markets, targeting frontline workers and critical services. The device is available via enterprise and partner channels. (HMD Secure)
This launch is significant as organisations throughout Europe aim to update their field communications, frequently seeking to replace or augment traditional radio fleets with cellular-capable devices that IT teams can manage at scale from a central console.
HMD is pushing the “sovereign” tech angle, marketing the Terra M as a key piece in a wider effort to establish European-controlled hardware, software, and supply chains—especially for sensitive sectors like public safety and critical infrastructure.
“This is a fully managed solution designed for teams and organizations that simply can’t risk communication breakdowns,” said Anssi Rönnemaa, HMD’s chief financial officer, in the company statement.
HMD calls the Terra M a compact phone made for quick communication. It features a glove-friendly touchscreen, big physical buttons, a loud speaker, plus programmable push-to-talk and emergency keys. The device carries an IP68/IP69K rating, signaling strong dust and water resistance, and it’s built to pass MIL‑STD‑810H, the U.S. military’s standard for shock and temperature durability.
The Terra M builds on an existing partnership with Eviden, the Atos Group’s product brand, centered on Lifelink MCx Connect — software designed to upgrade teams from narrowband radio push-to-talk to broadband voice and data over LTE and 4G/5G. “Embedding Lifelink MCx Connect directly into HMD’s Terra M phone marks a significant step,” said Bernard Payer, Eviden’s head of mission-critical systems, when the deal was announced. HMD Secure’s product page highlights that the Terra M runs on Qualcomm’s Dragonwing QCM2290 system-on-chip and includes Mobile Device Management (MDM) capabilities. These tools allow businesses to enroll devices, enforce policies, and push updates remotely, including OS and security patches through its HMD FOTA service. (HMD Secure)
HMD now finds itself competing in a packed segment where players include rugged phone makers and radio veterans offering hybrid gadgets that combine digital radio with broadband. Take Motorola Solutions: they market a TETRA-and-LTE portable device centered on the “push-to-talk plus apps” concept. (Motorolasolutions)
HMD announced it’s offering Terra M as a partner-driven bundle: connectivity plans through Lyfo, device management with Springdel and SOTI, plus push-to-talk features from Zello and Mobile Tornado. The package also includes apps like Threema, Joplin, and OsmAnd.
HMD hasn’t revealed a price or specified which European markets will get the device. This leaves both customers and competitors wondering if the “managed ecosystem” approach will actually speed up buying and cut costs, or if buyers will just stick with their current fleets and old radio contracts.
Execution stands out as a major risk. No matter how robust a handset is, it can falter if cross-border coverage, partner integration, security approvals, or deployment support aren’t up to par — particularly in public safety and critical infrastructure sectors, where procurement moves slowly and switching costs run high.
