Apple iOS 26.4 Release Nears: New Features Include AI Playlists, Video Podcasts, No New Siri

Cupertino, California, March 23, 2026, 03:40 PDT

Apple pushed out a release candidate for iOS 26.4 to testers on March 18, indicating the update’s public debut is close. Among the additions: new features for Apple Music and podcasts. Notably, some of the next AirPods Max 2 features will require iOS 26.4 or newer, according to official notes.

Why does this matter? iOS 26.4 is the next clear marker for iPhone users, especially as Apple’s splashier AI features continue to get bumped down the road. The company already confirmed last year that select Siri improvements won’t land until 2026. Meanwhile, Google is aggressively pitching Gemini as its own AI helper, and Amazon is moving ahead with Alexa+. That keeps the heat on Apple to demonstrate progress, even if it’s only incremental for now.

Apple still hasn’t confirmed when shipments begin. According to Apple-tracking outlets MacRumors and 9to5Mac, the window runs March 23 to March 25. That latter date matches up with Apple’s scheduled AirPods Max 2 order launch this Wednesday, they note.

Apple’s RC build release notes for iOS 26.4 outline several new features: Playlist Playground, a beta tool that creates Apple Music playlists from a text prompt, and Concerts, which highlights local events by artists users listen to. Other updates include offline music recognition, an Ambient Music widget, full-screen album art, urgent reminder flags, expanded Family Sharing payment options, plus improved keyboard accuracy for fast typists.

Apple has been ramping up its podcast push. Last month, the company announced that video podcasts are landing with iOS 26.4 this spring—meaning users will be able to flip between audio and video right inside the Apple Podcasts app. Eddy Cue, who heads up services at Apple, described the update as a “defining milestone” for the platform. There’s also a less flashy developer shift here. In its March update, Apple noted that iOS 26.4 tweaks the on-device model powering its Foundation Models framework—the software layer developers rely on for Apple’s native AI. The update, Apple said, sharpens the model’s ability to interpret instructions and work with in-app tools.

Timing lines up with hardware, too. On March 16, Apple rolled out its AirPods Max 2 and set March 25 as the order date. “Up to 1.5x more effective ANC,” meaning active noise cancellation, comes in the new model, according to Eric Treski, Apple’s audio product marketing director. He also pointed to new features like Adaptive Audio and Live Translation. Apple

Still, a few uncertainties linger. Apple notes that not all iOS features—or its Apple Intelligence AI tools—will land everywhere, or on every device. Language, region, hardware: details differ. Its consumer-facing iOS 26 update page hasn’t gone beyond iOS 26.3.1, either. So, both the public release timing and some features could change before launch.
