Apple’s $549 AirPods Max 2 are getting credit for stronger sound and better active noise cancellation, or ANC, which reduces outside noise. But the first wave of reviews says the refresh is too slight to make Apple’s over-ear headphones a clear value play against cheaper rivals. 1
That matters now because this is Apple’s first full AirPods Max update since 2020 and the model is reaching buyers this month in more than 30 countries. Reuters reported at launch that Apple was trying to compete more aggressively with Sony and Bose; the early comparisons suggest Apple has closed some performance gaps without ending the debate over price. 2
Apple announced the Max 2 on March 16 with its H2 chip, up to 1.5 times more effective ANC, Live Translation powered by Apple Intelligence, Apple’s AI software platform, and lossless audio over USB-C, a wired mode that avoids audio compression. The headphones start at $549 in the United States and offer up to 20 hours of listening time with ANC on; Eric Treski, Apple’s director of Audio Product Marketing, said the sound is “clean, rich, and acoustically detailed.” 3
Bloomberg’s verdict was blunt. In a review republished by the Economic Times on Thursday, the new model was described as more like “AirPods Max 1.5” than a proper sequel, with the old design, 20-hour battery estimate and unusual Smart Case still largely untouched after the long wait. 1
Tom’s Guide struck a less severe note, but only just. Its April 9 head-to-head gave AirPods Max 2 an 84-83 edge over Sony’s WH-1000XM6 on sound and features, yet Sony still won on ANC, call quality and battery life; Sony’s own store lists the XM6 at $459.99 and up to 30 hours of battery life. 4
The Bose matchup was no cleaner. Gizmodo said Apple beat Bose on sound, while Bose stayed lighter and cheaper; Bose sells the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) for $449 and lists 30 hours of battery life.
There is pressure from inside Apple’s own lineup as well. Apple’s comparison page shows the cheaper AirPods Pro 3 now share several of the Max 2’s headline software tools, including Live Translation, Adaptive Audio, Personalized Spatial Audio and Voice Isolation, while also adding heart-rate and hearing features the over-ear model does not have. 5
Apple says the internals changed more than the shell. Tim Millet, Apple’s vice president of platform architecture, said last week that the H2 in the Max 2 is not the same chip from a few years ago because it has been “enhanced with so much embedded firmware,” while Treski said the amplifiers, drivers and system architecture were “purpose built.” 6
The risk for Apple is straightforward. Live Translation on AirPods Max 2 requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone and remains in beta, Apple says, and Tom’s Guide found Android users lose access to several ecosystem features, which narrows the appeal outside Apple’s core base.
Taken together, the latest reviews suggest Apple has made the AirPods Max line more competitive on pure audio and noise cancellation, but not decisive enough to erase the trade-offs that have followed the product since 2020. For Apple loyalists, that may be enough. For everyone else, the cheaper alternatives still look hard to ignore. 1
