Smiths Group drops with traders watching July vote on buyback approval

Smiths Group Plc dropped more than the wider London market on Monday, after the engineering group gave more details on its big buyback. Shares finished at 2,593p, down 1.56%. The FTSE 100 lost 0.26%. Volume came in at 542,116, or 56% of the stock’s 65-day average. Smiths is now 5.58% off its Feb. 27 peak at £27.46. Monday’s RNS was more about the run-rate than the drop. Smiths said it picked up 855,000 shares from HSBC Bank plc between June 29 and July 3, buying them across London venues. All of those shares are set to be cancelled. Based on the reported volume-weighted prices, the average purchase came to roughly 2,585.64p, costing Smiths around £22.1 million in total.

Smiths Group Plc rose 1.54% to £26.34 on Friday, beating a 0.25% gain in the FTSE 100 Index, but the price move was not the main number in the stock. The sharper investor read is the amount of stock Smiths may still buy back while a major holder has lifted its disclosed exposure. A regulatory filing on Friday showed BlackRock Inc. at 12.01% of Smiths’ voting rights and financial instruments, up from 11.01% in the previous notice. The new position covered 36.1 million voting rights, including 9.67% attached to shares and 2.34% through financial instruments.

IMI plc (LON:IMI) lags FTSE 100 as buyback impact dulls gains

IMI plc fell 8p to 2,916p on Thursday, losing 0.27% while the FTSE 100 added 1.67%. IMI lagged the index by nearly 2 points. Trading volume was about 18% higher than usual. Hargreaves Lansdown listed the stock as closed for the day with pricing delayed. IMI gave up just a little ground. The setup was bigger. Shares are still sitting 39.12% higher year-on-year and now just 4.21% under their June 19 peak at 3,044.04p. That doesn’t leave much space for a typical buyback and guidance play unless July earnings prove the valuation.
