Methane spotted on interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS as new studies pin down its size

Metan objevený na mezihvězdné kometě 3I/ATLAS, nové studie upřesňují její velikost

Scientists report the first direct detection of methane in the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS and estimate its nucleus at 2.6 km wide, according to new arXiv preprints. The findings come from December observations by the James Webb and Hubble space telescopes as the comet moves out of the inner solar system. NASA and ESA tracked the object after its discovery in July 2025. Further data from ESA’s Juice mission are expected in February.

Sun fires 4 strong solar flares as NOAA tracks X8.1 blast and possible Earth brush-by

Slunce vyslalo 4 silné sluneční erupce, NOAA sleduje výbuch X8.1 a možný zásah Země

NOAA reported an X8.1-class solar flare from active region 4366, the strongest of four major flares detected by NASA between Feb. 1 and early Feb. 2. Forecasters raised the risk of radio blackouts and expect a minor solar radiation storm on Feb. 2. Most ejected material is projected to miss Earth, with only minor effects possible late Feb. 5 UTC. No significant geomagnetic storm is expected.

NASA’s TESS Spots Rare Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS — New Data Target Its Spin

TESS od NASA objevil vzácnou mezihvězdnou kometu 3I/ATLAS — Nová data cílí na její rotaci

NASA’s TESS spacecraft captured new images of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS in January as it exits the solar system. Scientists are analyzing brightness changes to study the comet’s rotation and activity. The comet, first spotted in July 2025, is only the third known object confirmed from outside the solar system. TESS observed it from January 15 to 22; data are now publicly available.

NASA’s TESS pauses planet hunt to track interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS as a rare alignment hits

NASA pozastavuje lov planet sondou TESS, aby sledovala mezihvězdnou kometu 3I/ATLAS během vzácného zarovnání

NASA redirected its TESS satellite from exoplanet surveys to observe interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS from January 15–22. All data will be released immediately without proprietary period. The timing coincides with the comet’s near-opposition alignment, which may enhance dust measurements. NASA confirms 3I/ATLAS poses no threat to Earth.

NASA interrupts TESS survey to track interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS as SPHEREx spots stronger gases

NASA přerušuje průzkum TESS, aby sledovala mezihvězdnou kometu 3I/ATLAS, zatímco SPHEREx detekuje silnější plyny

NASA redirected its TESS satellite to observe interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS from Jan. 15–22, interrupting its regular survey. SPHEREx data show the comet’s emissions of carbon monoxide and water vapor were 20 times higher in December than in August, with new detections of cyanide and organic gases. 3I/ATLAS, discovered in July 2025, is only the third known interstellar object and poses no threat to Earth.

Comet 3I/ATLAS suddenly looks “fully active” — and astronomers say the window is closing

Kometa 3I/ATLAS je najednou „plně aktivní“ — a astronomové varují, že okno se zavírá

NASA’s SPHEREx telescope detected a surge in gas and dust from interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS after its close solar pass. The comet, only the third confirmed interstellar object, will reach opposition on Jan. 22, offering extended nighttime visibility. Infrared data showed water vapor emissions 20 times higher than earlier readings. NASA found no evidence of artificial origin.
