Apple might not stick to its standard fall playbook for the next iPhone launch. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are still on track for September, but the regular iPhone 18 could arrive after that. Supply-chain chatter is heating up around an unreleased “Dark Cherry” Pro color, minor tweaks to the design, and a camera overhaul that’s not public yet. 9to5Mac
Timing is key here. The iPhone still drives the bulk of Apple’s profits. Back in January, the company reported a 16% jump in quarterly revenue to $143.8 billion and called it the iPhone’s “best-ever quarter”—a direct, and unusually candid, signal about demand as the next cycle approaches. Apple
China just gave investors another reason to keep an eye on the 2026 roster. According to Reuters, iPhone shipments in China jumped 20% in the first quarter, despite the overall smartphone market slipping 4%. Huawei led with a 20% share, Apple right behind at 19%. Xiaomi, meanwhile, saw its shipments tumble 35%. “Apple stands out for value,” Counterpoint Research analyst Ivan Lam noted, as competitors continue pushing prices higher. Reuters
September still stands out as the key timeframe for the release. 9to5Mac, looking at Apple’s established rollout pattern, suggests the iPhone 18 Pro unveiling will likely fall somewhere between Sept. 9 and Sept. 14, sticking with the familiar Friday timeline for pre-orders and store launches. Bloomberg, in a separate report last week, said Apple’s debut foldable phone is also targeted for a September announcement, launching alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.
This split marks a major change. According to current reports, Apple’s fall lineup will spotlight the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and possibly a foldable iPhone Ultra. Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 18, the iPhone 18e, and a new iPhone Air are now slated for release in the first half of 2027. This adjustment delays the launch of Apple’s lower-priced iPhones past the key holiday window, leaving the priciest devices to drive sales.
Apple is working up four color options for the iPhone 18 Pro: Light Blue, Dark Cherry, Dark Gray, and Silver, according to a Friday report from Macworld. Internal Pantone codes were referenced, pointing to the color-matching standards designers rely on. Notably, the Dark Cherry finish is said to be a richer, wine-inspired shade instead of the usual bright red.
The color lineup isn’t set in stone yet. According to Macworld, Apple hasn’t started mass production for the iPhone 18 Pro, so one of the rumored finishes might not make the cut. 9to5Mac echoed that point, highlighting the report’s claim that Cosmic Orange—the bold shade from the iPhone 17 Pro—won’t be back.
Design tweaks appear limited—this isn’t a dramatic overhaul. According to Macworld, leaked materials indicate a shrunken Dynamic Island (that’s the pill-shaped alert and controls zone), plus the gap between the rear glass cutout and the camera bump looks slimmer.
There could be more heft to the camera hardware story. According to a Thursday report from MacRumors, which referenced Korea’s ETNews, suppliers have started developing a variable-aperture setup for Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. The key detail: variable aperture gives the camera control over how much light hits the sensor, unlike a fixed-size opening.
Macworld reports Apple is going with more muted shades for its foldable iPhone—think silver, white, and an indigo variant. The publication notes that, opened up, the device should look a lot like an iPad mini and measure roughly 4.7 millimeters thick when unfolded. Apple hasn’t officially commented on the device or what it’ll be called.
There’s a chance these leaks will cement into expectations before Apple finalizes anything. Colors often shift late in development, and just because supply-chain samples surface doesn’t mean they’ll translate into what ships. The foldable iPhone, if it comes, still faces manufacturing hurdles—this would be Apple’s debut in a space where Samsung and Huawei already have years of experience. Apple hasn’t said a word about an iPhone 18 event, pricing, or specs so far.
