Lakefront Biotherapeutics Shares Drop as LKFT Gets Reevaluated

Lakefront Biotherapeutics NV shares dropped 2.7% to 23.80 euros in Amsterdam on Monday. In New York, its Nasdaq ADRs were off 1.7% at $27.86 early in the afternoon. The Belgian biotech, which recently took the Lakefront name, has lost about 15% this year on both markets.

Lakefront is still in the early days after its Galapagos rebrand. Shareholders okayed switching the name to Lakefront Biotherapeutics and adopted the new ticker LKFT. Management wants investors to now value it as a cash-heavy acquirer and builder of oncology and immunology programs, instead of focusing on the Galapagos legacy pipeline.

Lakefront’s most recent regulated filing is still the May 26 notice on Bank of America’s position. The company said Bank of America went above the 5% voting-rights mark on May 13, and by May 20, Bank of America had 623,434 voting rights along with 5.5 million equivalent financial instruments. That works out to 9.30% of Lakefront’s 65.9 million outstanding shares. The financial instruments are contracts like options or swaps that give exposure similar to shares.

Bank of America’s notice didn’t mention a strategic position. The bank showed exposure across affiliates like BofA Securities, Merrill Lynch International, and Bank of America National Association. Most of the exposure came from “rights of use” at BofA Securities.

Chief Executive Henry Gosebruch in May said he was eager to “consummate our partnership with Gilead” and called the Lakefront name a sign of a “strategic evolution.” Finance chief Aaron Cox said Lakefront would “remain robustly capitalized” after the cash outflows expected from the Gilead-Ouro deal. Gilead and Lakefront plan to work together on gamgertamig, which is also known as OM336, a BCMAxCD3 T-cell engager. That kind of drug aims immune T cells at certain disease-linked cells. BCMA is a target on some B cells and plasma cells. Gilead Chief Medical Officer Dietmar Berger described the approach as “differentiated.” For Ouro, Gilead said it would pay $1.675 billion in upfront cash and as much as $500 million tied to milestones. The stock isn’t trading on hopes for an imminent product launch, but instead looks like a balance-sheet and execution story at this stage. Lakefront reported 2.98 billion euros in cash, equivalents and financial investments as of March 31, but flagged major spending ahead in 2026 for Ouro and costs related to winding down its cell therapy operations.

Mixed signals in the peer group. Argenx, which has Belgian roots and a broader commercial footprint thanks to Vyvgart, said May 8 the FDA cleared Vyvgart and Vyvgart Hytrulo for more adult generalized myasthenia gravis patients. Argenx’s U.S. shares edged up on Monday, but Gilead, Lakefront’s partner on a deal, slipped.

But here’s where it gets tricky. The Lakefront case hangs on finishing and merging the Gilead-Ouro collaboration, holding onto enough cash for new deals, and showing clinical data that works for investors. The company said the deal or collaboration might not close on time, could fall through entirely, terms might change, and clinical trials could get delayed or hit problems.

No earnings report coming up this week to change the story. MarketScreener shows Lakefront’s next earnings and presentation set for Aug. 10, and Q3 results expected in November. That leaves the stock open to news on deals, filings, and shifts in biotech sentiment for now.
