  • Army creates AI-focused career field for officers (49B Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning)
January 2, 2026, 1:48 PM EST. The U.S. Army has created a new area of concentration, 49B Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, to train uniformed experts who will integrate AI and machine learning across warfighting functions. The role targets officers eligible for the Volunteer Transfer Incentive Program and emphasizes candidates with technical AI backgrounds. Graduates will undergo rigorous graduate-level training and will field and oversee robotics and autonomous systems on the battlefield, aiming to accelerate decision-making and optimize logistics. This aligns with the Pentagon's broader rollout of Gen AI tools for DoD users. The Army intends to build a dedicated cadre of in-house AI specialists, with the possibility of expanding the path to warrant officers later.
