- Nuno Mendes became the youngest Portuguese player to reach 50 Champions League proper appearances.
- PSG led Bayern Munich 3-2 at halftime in a fast Champions League semifinal first leg.
- The record came in a tie between the holders and one of Europe’s strongest attacking sides.
Paris Saint-Germain left back Nuno Mendes passed Cristiano Ronaldo’s long-held Portuguese Champions League age mark on Tuesday, reaching 50 appearances in the competition proper at 23 years and 313 days as PSG faced Bayern Munich in a semifinal first leg at Parc des Princes. Ronaldo had reached the same total at 24 years and 83 days, AS reported.
The timing made the record more than a database note. It came in a live semifinal, with PSG trying to defend their European crown and Bayern trying to take back the status that has often belonged to Munich in this competition.
By halftime, PSG led Bayern 3-2 after a wild first half. Harry Kane scored a 17th-minute penalty for Bayern, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia levelled in the 24th minute, João Neves headed PSG in front in the 33rd, Michael Olise made it 2-2 in the 41st and Ousmane Dembélé converted a stoppage-time penalty after a VAR handball review against Alphonso Davies.
The Champions League proper means the main tournament phase, excluding qualifying rounds. Mendes’ mark underlines how quickly he has become part of PSG’s European core under Luis Enrique, rather than just a young defender passing through a strong squad.
Luis Enrique had framed the tie as a meeting of Europe’s best. PSG’s official site quoted him before the game as saying Bayern were “one of the teams that I enjoy watching the most” and that PSG were “not here to negotiate; we want to win.” Paris Saint-Germain
Bayern did not arrive as a soft challenger. Coach Vincent Kompany told reporters that PSG, as holders, had the right to make big claims, but Bayern wanted “what they have.” He also warned that the semifinal would turn on small margins: “It’s about details. It’s about intensity, about energy,” Reuters reported. Reuters
Kompany was serving a one-game touchline ban, leaving assistant Aaron Danks to handle the bench. The absence did not stop Bayern from starting sharply, with Kane and Olise again central to a side that has enough pace and finishing to punish loose PSG defending.
Bayern’s own build-up had been bullish but measured. Sporting director Max Eberl said before the trip to Paris that it was “a completely even game” and that “nuances will make the difference,” according to Bayern’s website. FC Bayern
That is the risk for PSG. Mendes’ record is secure, but the tie is not. Opta’s pre-match model had Bayern as favourites to reach the final, giving them a 59.6% chance against PSG’s 40.4%, and noted that Bayern had won their last five Champions League games against the French club.
For Portugal, the milestone gives Mendes a clean place in the post-Ronaldo conversation, though not a simple comparison. Ronaldo’s first 50 Champions League games became the base for one of the competition’s defining careers. Mendes’ first 50 show something narrower but still valuable: early trust, durability and a role in a PSG team still playing at the sharp end of Europe.
