Spotify Adds Bookshop.org to Sell Physical Books in-App as “Page Match” Syncs Print and Audio

  • Later this spring, Spotify plans to enable users in the United States and Britain to purchase physical books directly through its app using Bookshop.org
  • The company is rolling out “Page Match,” a feature that syncs print or e-books directly to the corresponding place in an audiobook
  • Spotify is expanding its reach into books, aiming to diversify beyond music and stay competitive with bigger tech players

Spotify announced Thursday it will let users buy physical books through its app via Bookshop.org starting later this spring, available in the US and UK. Alongside this, Spotify is rolling out Page Match, a new feature that syncs a printed or e-book page to the exact spot in an audiobook. Owen Smith, Spotify’s global head of audiobooks, said, “the future of reading or listening needs to be flexible.” Bookshop.org CEO Andy Hunter added that “Spotify is financially supporting indie booksellers with each purchase.” 1

This move aims to shift discovery on Spotify from merely a play button to something resembling a storefront. It also lets Spotify discuss books without coming off as trying to out-Amazon Amazon.

Spotify’s Audiobooks in Premium service now covers 22 markets, boasting an English-language library of over 500,000 titles. New listener numbers have jumped 36%, with listening hours up 37%. Bookshop.org will take over pricing, inventory, and fulfillment—handling shipping and delivery. Spotify plans to roll out Page Match to all audiobook users by February 23. Meanwhile, the company has bumped its monthly Premium subscription to $12.99 in the US, Estonia, and Latvia. These moves come as Spotify aims to sharpen its edge against tech heavyweights like Apple and Amazon. 2

Spotify is introducing a button on audiobook pages that encourages users to “get a copy for your bookshelf.” When clicked, it redirects users to Bookshop.org to finish their purchase, according to The Verge. 3

Page Match aims to eliminate the frustrating delay when switching formats. Just scan a page, and the app instantly jumps to that exact spot in the audiobook. Scan again later, and it takes you right back to the text.

Spotify is framing its partnership with Bookshop as a method to drive sales to independent bookstores. The message comes off softer than a straightforward “we’re selling you stuff now,” yet the goal remains clear.

Print doesn’t have the same growth momentum that streaming enjoyed. Picking up a physical book takes more commitment than just trying out a chapter. Plus, having to exit the app to make a purchase might kill impulse buys, especially when the book feels more “maybe” than “must-have.”

Bookshop sees this partnership as a way to showcase indie stores to Spotify’s vast audience without needing to create its own discovery platform. For Spotify, the key issue is whether physical books will catch on as a valuable addition or just fade into the background of an already packed app.
