Tesco is telling Clubcard members to look at the Tesco app, with the supermarket rolling out “Freebie Thursdays,” a summer coupon push that gives some shoppers free items in stores. The campaign started Thursday, June 11, and is set to finish Wednesday, July 22. Tesco said a new coupon will go out each Thursday for six weeks, as detailed in the campaign terms.
Some Clubcard users got coupons for a free 150g bag of Walkers Sensations, with a few flavours reported like Thai Sweet Chilli, Mature Cheddar & Chutney, Onion & Balsamic Vinegar, and Roast Chicken & Thyme. Those first coupons have to be used by midnight on Wednesday, June 17. The next set is expected on June 18.
Tesco isn’t giving the offer to all Clubcard members. The company’s terms say coupons go out at Tesco’s discretion to active Clubcard members who used the Tesco app in the last six months and made a transaction with their Clubcard in the past six weeks. The terms say “no guarantee” every Clubcard member gets a coupon during the promotion.
Tesco customers get a coupon but need to go into the Tesco app and add it to their Clubcard themselves if they want to use it. The retailer says these coupons last seven days after they’re issued, only work in store, and aren’t valid for Tesco Grocery Home Shopping or Whoosh orders.
Shama Wilson, group membership and loyalty director at Tesco, said Clubcard holders get the best value and the retailer is looking for new ways to reward them. She said the summer giveaways will cover both Tesco own-brand and branded goods, beginning with Sensations.
Supermarket loyalty promotions are at the center of UK grocers’ fight to keep customers coming back as budgets stay under strain. The Competition and Markets Authority said in a review that 97% of shoppers have at least one supermarket loyalty card. On average, shoppers sign up to three schemes.
Tesco has set a cap on the promotion. Each eligible Clubcard member can get only one free product coupon during the period. Which products and customers are picked can change each week, and stocks may run out. Coupons can’t be swapped for cash, sold or transferred. Tesco also says it can change or pull the offer at any time.
