BENTONVILLE, Arkansas, August 21, 2026, 19:24 CDT
- Tap-to-pay will roll out at some locations starting August 24.
- All U.S. stores and clubs have a year-end deadline.
- Fuel-station support coming mid-2027.
Walmart Inc. (NASDAQ:WMT) is set to roll out tap-to-pay at some U.S. checkouts on Monday. The retailer says the upgrade will hit all 5,217 Walmart stores and Sam’s Club outlets by the end of the year. This is a full-scale payment shift for Walmart, not a test run.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) Pay and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google Pay are now coming to Walmart as the retailer finishes a stretch without those options for phone payments. Both payment methods will run next to certain contactless cards and watches. Walmart had pushed its own QR-code Walmart Pay for mobile checkout.
Scale is about reach. Walmart says it has 4,615 U.S. stores and 602 Sam’s Clubs as of July 31. The company says about 90% of Americans are within 10 miles of its 5,200 or so stores and clubs.
| Rollout stage | Coverage | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Initial activation | Some Walmart and Sam’s Club sites | August 24, 2026 |
| National retail rollout | Every U.S. store and club | End of 2026 |
| Fuel rollout | Walmart and Sam’s Club gas stations | Mid-2027 |
Walmart hasn’t listed which stores are live first. That means shoppers won’t know if tap-to-pay is on at their local terminal Monday. There’s no public rollout timeline for the rest of the week either.
Walmart is hanging on to its current payment tools. Shoppers can still use Walmart Pay for digital receipts and to get Walmart+ fuel perks. Scan & Go at Sam’s Club keeps letting members skip regular checkout.
| Checkout method | Customer action | App required | Verified extra function |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tap-to-pay | Use a contactless card, mobile or wearable to tap | No for contactless cards | Works with digital wallets that qualify |
| Walmart Pay | Open app, scan QR at checkout | Walmart app | Access receipts, get Walmart+ fuel discounts |
| Sam’s Club Scan & Go | Scan products with the app and pay in aisle | Sam’s Club app | Avoids waiting at the main checkout |

Walmart says shoppers can now add eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club, and OnePay cards to digital wallets, but the retailer didn’t post a full list of which issuers or devices work. Customers should look to see if their cards or phones are eligible before depending on the feature.
Unlike just displaying a card number, Apple Pay gives the terminal a device account number and a separate code for each transaction. Apple says the card number doesn’t go to the merchant—neither from Apple nor the device.
One data issue is still unsettled. Walmart hasn’t clarified if outside-wallet purchases will show up automatically in app receipts. Details on how Walmart+ perks will tie to those buys also haven’t been spelled out.
Walmart reported a strong digital quarter, with Walmart U.S. e-commerce sales up 24%. Store-fulfilled delivery jumped 40%. E-commerce at Sam’s Club U.S. climbed 26% as more members used Scan & Go.
CEO John Furner said, “We want to be really flexible for customers.” With tap-to-pay at checkout, shoppers don’t have to open the Walmart app on their phones to pay. Q2 FY27 earnings transcript

Risks: The company hasn’t named its first stores yet. Fuel won’t be supported at launch. Not all cards, devices or wallets may work. A bigger launch could show gaps in terminal setups or staffing.
Shoppers should expect phone taps to become as normal as swiping a card at Walmart. The retailer now has four months to get there, with the national deadline looming.
