BAE Systems trades up as GCAP funding flows to contracts

July 6, 2026

London, July 6, 2026, 12:03 (BST)

  • BAE Systems plc was up 1.64% at 2,014p at 11:43 BST, while the FTSE 100 (INDEXFTSE:UKX) slipped 0.21% at 11:45 BST.
  • The £4.6 billion GCAP win comes to 7.6% of BAE’s about £60.5 billion market cap, before Edgewing’s three owners divide it up.
  • The deal is notable as it shifts a delayed UK defence budget item into funded design work for a fighter project due in 2035.

BAE Systems plc shares climbed Monday. The UK defence stock traded higher after Britain, Italy and Japan agreed to fund the next phase of the Global Combat Air Programme fighter jet. London was in a regular session at the time; the London Stock Exchange trades from 0800 to 1630 BST weekdays.

Shares rose 32.5p to 2,014p by 1143 BST, putting nearly £1 billion on the company’s market cap by Google Finance’s 3.01 billion shares count. That move outperformed the FTSE 100, off 0.21% at 10,656.35 soon after.

Scale is the real story for investors here. The £4.6 billion contract is big enough to stand out, but not big enough by itself to drive a new valuation for BAE. The number works out to about 5.5% of BAE’s 2025 order book and 15% of next year’s sales. The deal is at Edgewing, which is a joint venture with BAE, Leonardo S.p.A. , and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement, backed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd .

Edgewing GCAP contract£4.6 bln
BAE current market cap£60.54 bln7.6%
BAE expected 2025 backlog£83.6 bln5.5%
BAE projected 2025 revenue£30.662 bln15.0%

Shares swung on risk, not short-term earnings. Reuters said the award came after nine months of budget delays, with the UK putting £8.6 billion into GCAP over four years in its Defence Investment Plan.

The UK government said the contract moves the fighter jet design forward, setting out main requirements and testing steps. Entry into service is set for 2035. Defence minister Luke Pollard called the deal a step “towards delivery” of the programme. The government said GCAP supports 4,500 jobs in the UK through around 600 suppliers. Gov

Edgewing said the 18-month contract wraps up the advanced concept and assessment phase and gives funding for more joint detailed design and development work. GCAP Agency Chief Executive Masami Oka said the “future of GCAP has never been more assured.” Edgewing CEO Marco Zoff described the structure as a “single engineering prime.” EDGEWING

BAE started the week with an all-time high order backlog. The defense group posted 2025 sales of £30.7 billion, with underlying EBIT at £3.32 billion. New orders came in at £36.8 billion, pushing the backlog to £83.6 billion. In February, BAE said it expects 2026 sales to grow 7% to 9%, with underlying EBIT up 9% to 11%.

Chief Executive Charles Woodburn said in May that BAE’s first months of 2026 have been “strong,” and the company left its full-year outlook unchanged. Shares are still 14.7% under the 52-week high of 2,360p, despite Monday’s move. Investegate

The catch is the £4.6 billion isn’t just for BAE. It’s split between three governments and goes to a joint contractor. For investors, the main takeaway is the programme schedule is now less risky, but it doesn’t mean BAE gets all the cash in revenue.
