Colossal Biosciences says its three gene-edited wolves, modeled on the extinct dire wolf, are healthy and ready to breed. Outside scientists dispute whether the animals qualify as dire wolves. The animals were created using ancient DNA and CRISPR edits to gray-wolf cells, then cloned and born via dog surrogates. The company’s next step is to test if the edited traits pass to offspring.
