Australia’s Optus suffered a nine-hour outage blocking 000 emergency calls for about 4,500 customers; the government launched an inquiry. Malaysia began 5G Broadcast trials, while India’s BSNL deployed a domestic 4G stack covering 22 million people. Nigeria revoked a 5% telecom tax and approved spectrum leasing for MTN. Vodafone and Digi Romania agreed to split Telekom Romania Mobile’s assets.

Global GSM Shake-Up: 2G & 3G Fade as 4G Expands – Key Developments (Sept 12–13, 2025)

Governments and operators in 75 countries have shut down 169 2G and 3G networks as of 2024, according to GSMA. Namibia launched its first private 4G network, while South Africa plans to retire 2G/3G by 2027. The Philippines and New Zealand are phasing out legacy networks. In Nigeria, T2 gained 290,000 subscribers after a roaming deal with MTN.

Russia enacted new internet laws, including fines for VPN searches and mandatory state messenger apps. A Verizon outage on August 30 left millions in the U.S. without mobile service for nine hours.
