  • Musk: Tesla would have spent double on Nvidia hardware without AI4 chipset
    January 8, 2026, 11:12 PM EST. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the automaker would have had to spend roughly twice as much on Nvidia hardware to train its systems if not for Tesla's AI4 chipset. He noted Tesla is nearing two million cars annually, all equipped with the dual SoC AI4, eight cameras, steering-actuation redundancy and high-bandwidth links. By year's end, he said Tesla will have spent about $10 billion cumulatively on Nvidia hardware for training. Musk said Nvidia provides useful tools to automakers, but the broader auto industry is doing little on its own to advance self-driving. He also referenced discussions around Nvidia's kit and said the Alpamayo system could be competitive with FSD in five to six years, with safety gains taking longer.
