  • The $500 Apple Check That Launched a Tech Empire Heads to Auction
January 8, 2026, 10:48 PM EST. RR Auction's sale runs through January 29 and spans Apple products, Jobs-era memorabilia, and items once touched by the co-founders. The top lot is Apple's first check, written March 16, 1976 for $500 to designer Howard Cantin, signed by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, predating Apple's partnership. It's expected to fetch upwards of $500,000. Other highlights include an Apple-1 prototype board, the earliest known fiberglass Apple-1, estimated at $500,000; a first-generation 2007 iPhone still factory-sealed (est. $50,000); and the February 1984 Macworld issue signed by Jobs and Wozniak (est. $100,000). A trove from Jobs's private life includes documents and a bedroom desk from the 1960s, part of items consigned by his stepbrother John Chovanec, reflecting a garage-origin story that shaped a global tech empire.
