Erste Bank and Sparkassen, both under Erste Group Bank (VIE:EBS), started offering a limited-edition spark7 debit card this week. The card features an LED that lights up for contactless payments. The group calls it the first illuminated debit card in Austria.
The launch puts a new spin on a familiar payment method. Instead of changing the Mastercard rails, the card itself gets the spotlight in the phone era.
The light does not need a battery. According to CHIP on August 20, a flat antenna pulls energy from the checkout terminal’s electromagnetic field. This powers both the payment chip and the LED for a moment.
That same energy carries payment data too. Mastercard (NYSE:MA) says contactless cards use a small antenna, with tap-to-pay making up over two-thirds of its in-person transactions now.
| Payment format | What the user carries | Visible tap feedback | Contactless payment | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| spark7 LED debit card | Full-size card | LED built in | Yes | Available with eligible new accounts until November 15, 2026 |
| Standard spark7 debit card | Full-size card | No LED mentioned | Yes | Comes with youth account |
| Debit Card Micro | Key fob or wristband | No LED mentioned | Yes | Must buy separately; price not listed on product page |
| Phone wallet | Smartphone that works with wallet | Feedback through device | Yes | Activation is free; must be at least 14 |
Erste Bank is aiming for a clear message with its new product. “Banking for young people must be more than modern, digital, safe and practical. Above all, it must also be fun,” Maja Kölich, the bank’s marketing boss, said in German. Medianet launch report
Erste is pitching the account as a limited product. The bank put out a nationwide campaign with the black card, rainbow edge, and promo prizes.
| Campaign term | Verified detail | Reader impact |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Open to anyone under 19 | No fees for the account, managing it, or for getting a debit card |
| Cash incentive | €20 | Shows up in account one week after opening |
| Limited card | Given out if you join during the promo | No listed price for the card on its own |
| Offer deadline | Ends November 15, 2026 | Accounts opened after that date don’t qualify for this campaign |
| Replacement after campaign | Switches to a regular spark7 card | If you lose the LED card, the bank does not guarantee another LED |
Spark7 puts more weight on account terms than on features. There’s a €400 weekly card cap, and you don’t need a PIN for contactless buys under €50.
| Feature | LED card | Standard contactless card | Phone wallet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payment data link | NFC antenna | NFC antenna | NFC radio |
| On-device power | No battery; powered by terminal field | No battery needed for tap | Needs device to be charged |
| User feedback | Shows with card LED and terminal | Terminal response only | Device and terminal show response |
| Credential protection | EMV contactless transaction | EMV contactless transaction | Uses token and device authentication |
| Needs a phone | No | No | Yes |
Users can also add the spark7 card to a supported phone wallet, so they get four options: full card, illuminated card, Micro card, or their phone.
Risks: The LED is just a visual feature, not a payment upgrade. Erste hasn’t said how many cards it will issue or shared details on durability or LED lifespan. Owners could be unhappy with the limited replacement offer after November.
The commercial test is clear. If teens care about the physical aspect, cards still have a shot next to wallets and wearables. Erste gets until November to see if the spark7 offer lands.
