HONOR is set to launch its Robot Phone in China on August 18, with the device featuring a 200-megapixel motorized camera in a premium model. The company is betting that users will shell out flagship prices for hardware-based camera movement, in addition to software-based photo features.

The idea is simple: with a camera that pans and tilts, you can keep one person in the frame and skip a camera operator. HONOR says the movement relies on voice localization, AI subject tracking and gesture controls.

The device aims for the middle ground between smartphones and pocket gimbal cameras. It puts calls, editing, and sharing together with built-in stabilization gear that usually comes as a separate piece. That adds up to a moving setup that’s more complicated.

HONOR built in a 1/1.28-inch main sensor with an f/1.6 aperture. There’s also a 200MP periscope camera that handles 2.7x optical zoom. The 50MP ultrawide camera offers a 122-degree field of view.

HONOR is betting on the gimbal. The company says its 2.6g titanium motor can hit 360 degrees per second in control speed. There are over 100 precision parts packed in.

ARRI is supplying some image science and parts of the production workflow. The phone captures 10-bit LogC3 video, running it through HONOR’s H1 image chip. Video files can then be brought into DaVinci Resolve using ARRI LUTs.

Workflow is a bigger deal than just screen resolution here. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has 4K/120fps Dolby Vision, Apple Log 2, and ProRes RAW on the iPhone 17 Pro now. DJI’s Pocket 3 has a gimbal and 10-bit D-Log M for $499. HONOR is trying to bridge the gap between these types of devices.

The other specs line up with high-end Android phones. The device runs on Qualcomm’s (NASDAQ:QCOM) Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip. Battery is a 7,060mAh silicon-carbon pack, with 120W wired and 50W wireless charging.

The 6.31-inch LTPO OLED panel has a refresh rate that goes from 1Hz up to 120Hz. HONOR claims it can hit up to 6,800 nits in peak brightness, with PWM dimming at 4,320Hz. These numbers come from the company, not third-party tests.

Commercial reach is still limited. Pre-orders started in China on August 12, but there’s no word yet on global sales. Reviewers also don’t have much data on how the gimbal holds up over time or what repairs might cost.

Risks: Moving parts could hurt water resistance and bump up repair risks. It’s not clear yet how long software will get updates, what pricing will look like worldwide, or which markets will see a launch. Creator interest could shift to lower-cost gimbal cameras.

The August 18 sale should offer the first look at real demand. If buyers go for the price, it’s possible mechanical camera movement could be the next big smartphone fight. If demand falls flat, the Robot Phone probably stays a niche standout.
