Leaked images published on Monday suggest Samsung’s next major Android skin, One UI 9, will bring a cleaner Settings menu, AI-assisted photo editing shortcuts and a tap-based sharing option ahead of the company’s next foldable-phone cycle. Android Authority and SammyGuru said the changes point to smaller, practical refinements rather than a wholesale redesign.
The timing matters because Google’s Android 17 reached platform stability on March 26, giving handset makers a firmer base for final software work, while Samsung on April 9 expanded its One UI 8.5 beta to more Galaxy devices. 9to5Google reported last month that One UI 9 is expected to arrive later this year with Samsung’s foldables, so the fresh leaks surfaced while the current beta program is still spreading.
That matters in a tougher market. Apple led global smartphone shipments in the first quarter with a 21% share, while Samsung’s shipments fell 6% to 20%, Reuters reported, citing Counterpoint data; analyst Shilpi Jain said the slowdown reflected memory makers “prioritizing AI data centers” over consumer electronics. SammyGuru said the latest build shows small suggestion pills — tappable prompts for one-step edits — above the photo editor input field. The site also showed a more compact About phone screen and a Settings search bar that expands and collapses with smoother animation, changes Android Authority described as part of a leaner Galaxy interface.
An earlier leak from SammyFans, published on April 11, sketched the same direction inside Settings. It reported full-phone previews for Light and Dark mode, clearer alphabetical headers in the Apps list, fewer storage details on the main screen and less explanatory text in Galaxy AI sections.
Sharing looks like another target. SammyGuru said a fresh visual leak and an earlier concept video showed Tap to Share inside Quick Share, with transfers of files, links, contacts and even Wi‑Fi details triggered by bringing devices together. 9to5Google previously reported a similar gesture in leaked Samsung software that appears to rely on NFC, a short-range wireless link.
The idea would extend a broader file-sharing push already under way. Samsung said on April 9 that it was widening One UI 8.5 beta to more Galaxy models and adding AirDrop support through Quick Share, with that compatibility already available on the Galaxy S26 series, while SammyGuru said Tap to Share looked similar to Apple’s NameDrop-style exchange flow.
Samsung executives have been telegraphing a bigger bet on simpler AI features. Co-CEO T M Roh told Reuters in January the company wanted AI across “all products, all functions, and all services,” and MX chief operating officer Won-Joon Choi said in February that a redesigned Bixby should reduce “friction in everyday tasks.” Reuters
But the payoff is not assured. Samsung language-AI executive Park Ji-sun told Reuters in January the company was “one step ahead of the industry” on AI features, yet Forrester analyst Thomas Husson said there was still no “killer application,” and Counterpoint’s Lim Su-jeong warned Samsung’s foldable sales had been “stagnating” against Chinese rivals. Reuters
There is execution risk, too. 9to5Google said in March that internal One UI 9 builds looked closer to proofs of concept than final releases, and SammyGuru said Tap to Share is not yet functional, leaving room for Samsung to change or drop some of the cleaner layouts, animations or sharing tools before launch.
For now, the leaks suggest One UI 9 is shaping up as a practical update aimed at friction points users hit every day — finding settings, fixing photos and moving files. Samsung’s latest official software move was to widen the One UI 8.5 beta on April 9, but leaks are already offering a glimpse of what may follow when the foldable cycle arrives later this year.
