Virginia Storm Threat Today: Richmond Faces Wind, Hail And Brief Tornado Risk As Ohio Rain Pushes East

RICHMOND, Virginia, April 29, 2026, 07:08 EDT

A cold front moving out of the Ohio Valley is set to bring showers and thunderstorms to Virginia on Wednesday, with the strongest storms in the southern Mid-Atlantic carrying a limited risk of damaging wind, hail and a brief tornado later in the day. The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center put parts of the central Appalachians and southern Mid-Atlantic under a Marginal Risk, the lowest of its five severe-storm threat levels.

The timing matters because the rain and storm window lines up with the afternoon and evening commute in and around Richmond. The National Weather Service forecast for Richmond called for showers, with thunderstorms possible after 2 p.m., a high near 70, and more showers and storms likely before 10 p.m. Wednesday night.

WTVR’s Weather Authority said the Richmond morning should start dry before showers and storms develop by midday and last into early evening. It said wind shear — changing wind speed or direction with height — could support damaging gusts or a brief tornado in the strongest storms, though marginal heat and moisture should limit how widespread severe weather becomes.

But the forecast is not locked in. NWS Wakefield said thicker morning clouds and rain could cut off the heating storms need to strengthen, while breaks in the overcast could allow more unstable air to build and lift the severe threat; most areas are still expected to see less than a quarter inch of rain, too little to change the drought picture.

A Tuesday NWS Wakefield briefing said severe-to-extreme drought conditions were likely to persist across much of the area despite light rainfall this week. The same briefing said mainly dry weather should close the work week, with only low-end rain chances returning by Saturday.

The same system already was affecting the Ohio Valley. WCPO meteorologist Steve Raleigh wrote that a disturbance pivoting through the region would keep rain going around Cincinnati on Wednesday, with wind gusts of 20 to 25 mph and some storms acting as “soakers” that could produce more than a half inch of rain. For Cincinnati and southwest Ohio, NWS Wilmington said low pressure moving through the Ohio Valley would bring off-and-on light rain Wednesday, while limited instability should keep widespread thunderstorms in check. Cooler air follows, with highs Friday and Saturday about 10 to 15 degrees below normal and frost possible Friday night and Saturday night.

In northeast Ohio, NWS Cleveland said widespread rain showers would linger much of Wednesday, with the highest totals in the southeastern part of its forecast area, where up to an inch could fall. The office said a cooler Canadian air mass would push highs into the low-to-mid 50s Thursday and Friday, with overnight lows in the 30s raising frost or freeze concerns.

Cleveland’s local forecast called for a 90% chance of showers, mainly before 3 p.m., a high near 58 and new rainfall of a quarter to a half inch. The city is expected to stay cooler into the weekend, with a low near 39 Friday night and a high near 53 Saturday.

For Virginia, the main severe-weather window remains late Wednesday afternoon into evening. For Ohio, the story turns quickly from rain to chill. That split is the shape of the system now: a short-lived storm threat on its eastern edge, then several cooler days behind it.
