Etihad Orders 10 Boeing Jets, Raising Talk of Hard-to-Get 787 Slots

Etihad Airways is nearing a deal for 10 more Boeing 787 jets, according to people briefed on the matter. The order would boost the Abu Dhabi carrier’s long-haul fleet, as early slots for wide-body deliveries are tight. Wide-bodies are twin-aisle planes mostly used for international routes. Reuters said the deal might be unveiled at the July 20-24 Farnborough Airshow, but sources said talks are still ongoing. Etihad and Boeing both declined to comment. Airbus SE is moving into engine-making, something civil aircraft companies usually avoid. The company and MTU Aero Engines AG plan a joint venture to build and sell a fully electric hydrogen fuel-cell engine for commercial jets. They aim to start in 2027 if regulators and labour sign off. Airbus called the move the “next logical step.” MTU’s Stefan Weber said they want a “safe, reliable and economical” propulsion system. Investors didn’t price in any short-term lift for the project. Google Finance listed Airbus at 198.56 euros as of 1647 CEST, down 2.64%, valuing the company at 156.99 billion euros with a P/E of 31.32. MTU was at 356.40 euros at 1646 CEST, off 3.18%, giving it a 19.21 billion euro

Qantas Project Sunrise reward seats push loyalty squeeze to investors

Qantas Airways is using the world’s longest passenger flight to see how few fixed-rate frequent-flyer seats it can offer and still fill the cabin. Qantas’ new Airbus SE A350-1000ULR order is coming with a rewards angle for investors. The jet carries 238 seats: six First suites, 52 Business suites, 40 Premium Economy and 140 Economy seats. That’s 98 up front, so 41.2% of seats are in premium cabins, even before Economy Plus. Qantas plans to open ticket sales in February 2027 for daily non-stops from Sydney to London. The first flights are penciled for October 2027.

Qantas Airways said one of its Airbus A380 jets will get extra wing checks after an emergency safety order from Europe, but the airline doesn't expect any impact on its flight schedule. “There is no impact to Qantas flights as a result of the airworthiness directive,” a spokesperson said.
