SEOUL, August 19, 2026, 06:09 KST — Samsung Electronics (KRX:005930) began adding Volkswagen ID. electric-vehicle keys to Samsung Wallet across Europe. The feature can unlock, start and share access to seven named ID. models without a physical key.
- The rollout covers seven Volkswagen ID. models in 37 listed European markets.
- Eligible vehicles must be built on or after April 27, 2026.
- ID. software 6.0.1 and factory Digital Key preparation are also required.
The phone list is broad. The car list is not. Existing Volkswagen AG (ETR:VOW3) owners cannot add support through software alone when their vehicle lacks the required hardware.
That cutoff is the practical story. Samsung says earlier vehicles are unsupported because of hardware requirements. Volkswagen also requires an ID account, identity verification and a separate VW Connect contract.
| Eligibility check | Required condition |
|---|---|
| Volkswagen model | ID.Polo, ID.Cross, ID.3neo, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7 or ID.Buzz |
| Production date | April 27, 2026 or later |
| Vehicle software | ID. software 6.0.1 or later |
| Factory hardware | “Preparation for Digital Key” option package |
| Owner setup | Volkswagen ID account, identity check and VW Connect contract |
| Geography | 37 listed European markets, including Poland, Germany and Britain |
Eligible drivers can lock, unlock and start the car from Samsung Wallet. They can also open the trunk, share a key with trusted people and later withdraw access. Permissions can limit what a shared key allows.
| Access method | What it does | User action |
|---|---|---|
| Ultra-wideband | Hands-free lock, unlock and vehicle start | Phone can remain in a pocket or bag |
| Near-field communication | Unlock and start | Tap the phone against the vehicle reader |
| Remote Key Entry | Opens the trunk | Select the control in Samsung Wallet |
| Key sharing | Grants or withdraws another person’s access | Use Samsung Wallet permission controls |
“The Digital Key is an important step toward a seamless and connected vehicle experience for our customers,” Volkswagen executive Axel Heinrich said. He leads system architecture, concepts and innovation at the passenger-car brand. Samsung Newsroom
UWB provides the smoothest experience because it measures distance securely. NFC remains the fallback for tap-based access and low-battery operation. The Car Connectivity Consortium added UWB and Bluetooth coverage to its certification program in 2025.
| Galaxy support tier | Examples named by Samsung | Volkswagen key experience |
|---|---|---|
| UWB-capable premium phones | Galaxy S21+ through S26+ generations, selected Ultra and Edge models, Note20 Ultra, Z Fold2 through Z Fold8 | Hands-free access plus NFC |
| NFC-capable mainstream phones | Broader Galaxy S and FE models, Z Flip generations, A36/A56/A37/A57 and XCover7 Pro, subject to regional exceptions | Tap-based access |
| Not on Samsung’s list | Unlisted Galaxy devices | Support not confirmed |
Samsung stores the key on the device and protects it with Samsung Knox. The company says the system meets EAL6+ certification standards. A lost phone’s key can be managed or removed through Samsung Find.
The Volkswagen deal extends an established wallet strategy. Samsung already supports digital keys for Audi, Mercedes-Benz Group (ETR:MBG) and Porsche AG (ETR:P911) vehicles. The latest rollout adds the mass-market ID. range.
| Samsung Wallet vehicle expansion | Announced rollout | Named scope |
|---|---|---|
| Audi | November 2024 | Select Audi vehicles |
| Mercedes-Benz | From July 2025 | Select Mercedes-Benz vehicles |
| Porsche | December 2025 | Macan MY26, followed by Cayenne Electric |
| Volkswagen | August 18, 2026 | Seven named ID. electric models in Europe |
Scale matters. Volkswagen delivered more than 4.7 million vehicles in 2025, including about 382,000 battery-electric models. Digital access can now become a differentiator across a larger EV base, but only as new hardware-equipped cars replace older stock.
Risks: Compatibility varies by phone, country and vehicle equipment. Older ID. cars cannot gain the missing hardware through an over-the-air update. A dead or lost phone also makes backup access planning important.
The rollout began in Europe on August 18. Its value is immediate for eligible buyers. For many current ID. owners, however, the digital key remains a next-car feature.
